Should You Paint Your House and Clean Your Windows at the Same Time?
We all know the sayings: two birds with one stone, more bang for your buck… but what about two home improvements with one project?
We get asked all the time: “Should my windows get cleaned before, after, or even during painting?” And the short answer is: after. The longer answer? Well, that's what this blog is here for.
Why This Question Comes Up More Than You’d Think
Most homeowners don’t naturally plan window cleaning and painting together. One usually leads to the other. You schedule an exterior paint job, and suddenly you notice the windows. Or you’re getting your windows cleaned, and now the trim and siding don’t look quite as fresh as you’d like.
It’s one of those “while we’re at it…” moments that turns into a bigger decision. And that’s where timing matters.
What Happens During an Exterior Paint Job
To understand the order, it helps to know what actually happens during painting. Before any paint goes on, there’s prep work:
- Power washing
- Scraping and sanding
- Caulking and sealing
- Priming
That process is designed to create a clean, stable surface for the paint to adhere to. But, between washing, dust, and general jobsite activity, glass tends to pick up some water spots and fine debris. So even if your windows were spotless going in… it’s still possible there could be some slight residue after.
Why Cleaning Windows After Painting Usually Makes More Sense
All that to say if you clean your windows before painting, there’s a good chance they’ll need to be cleaned again anyway. If you clean them after, you’re finishing the project with everything looking its best at the same time. You’ll also enjoy that spotless glass for more than just an afternoon.
- No leftover dust or residue from prep work
- No missed spots from overspray or handling
- A cleaner, sharper final look overall
Fresh paint already makes a big difference. Clean windows take it one step further by making everything look brighter, clearer, and more finished.
Are There Times When You’d Clean Windows First?
There are a few situations where cleaning beforehand can still make sense. Of course, if there is still going to be some time before painting starts, there’s no point in letting your windows accumulate more and more dirt and debris.
- If windows are extremely dirty and need to be cleaned for inspection
- If you’re trying to evaluate trim/caulk condition or existing paint issues
- If it’s been a long time since they’ve been cleaned and visibility is limited
In those cases, a quick cleaning sometime before the project can help you (or your contractor) see what’s actually going on. But even then, most homeowners still plan for a final cleaning after the painting is complete.
The “Do Both at the Same Time” Approach
If you’re already planning one of these services, it’s worth at least thinking about the other. Not because you have to do both, but because the combination tends to work well together. Painting refreshes all the other surfaces around your house. Cleaning the windows is the finishing touch that brings it together. It can also have practical and financial benefits. If you hire a company that will do both, there is a convenience that is often reflected in the overall quote and you don't need to go fishing for another reputable company.
A Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference
This is one of those details that’s easy to overlook. Windows don’t always stand out when they’re dirty. You get used to it over time. But once everything is cleaned, especially next to fresh paint, it’s noticeable in a good way. More light comes in. Lines look sharper. The whole exterior feels more put together. It's the difference between “better” and “done”.
