Deck Staining Project in Paso Robles
Goal: Durable Sun Protection for a Repeat Client
On this residential deck project in Paso Robles, the homeowner needed a more durable solution to protect the deck from the region’s intense sun exposure. The original semi-transparent stain was not holding up, and they were looking for a longer-lasting product to extend the life of their decking. As a repeat client, we wanted to ensure we provided the best possible service once again.
Product Selection
We selected Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products for this project due to their proven durability and performance. For the back deck and stairs, we applied SuperDeck Semi-Solid Stain in the color Bamboo. This semi-solid stain offers excellent UV protection, ideal for decks that see a lot of sunlight.
For the front deck, we used SuperDeck Solid Body Stain in the color Tranquil Sea. The solid stain was chosen for its enhanced coverage and ability to withstand harsh sun and weather conditions over time.
Deck Preparation Process
Preparation is key to ensuring long-lasting results, especially in the North County San Luis Obispo region where outdoor decks face year-round sun exposure. Here's how we approached it:
Power Washing: We began by power washing both decks to remove built-up dirt, chalk, and debris.
Mildew Treatment: After the initial cleaning, we washed the surfaces with a mild bleach solution to treat any existing mildew or algae. This step ensures that organic growth doesn’t compromise the new coating.
Sanding: Once the decks were cleaned and dried, we lightly sanded the surfaces to ensure a smooth application and better bonding for the new stain.
Masking: We carefully masked off all areas that weren’t being stained, using plastic sheeting, paper, and painter’s tape to avoid unwanted splatter and ensure clean lines.
Application
We applied two full coats of SuperDeck Stain to the deck surfaces. The semi-solid stain used on the back deck provides a balance between allowing the wood grain to show through while offering added sun protection. The solid stain on the front deck provides a completely opaque finish, adding even more durability and coverage against the elements.
Client Satisfaction
Our client was thrilled with the results, giving us a perfect 10 out of 10 rating. They were particularly pleased with the hard work and professionalism of our team members, Zach and Jose, who ensured that every detail was addressed. This was the second time we worked with this homeowner, and we're always glad to see repeat clients happy with the results of their projects.
